This Autumn was quite the celebration in the Jura, and with reason, the AOC Cr\u00e9mant du Jura was celebrating 30 years anniversary! \u00a0Luckily at Domaine Rolet, there were many bottles to pop especially for this occasion. \u00a0But did you know Domaine Rolet’s importance in creating this appellation? \u00a0Here, we recount the story of Pierre Rolet, and his involvement in this important appellation, now known and appreciated internationally!

On October 9, 1995, the decree establishing a new appellation in the Jura was officially published:\u00a0AOC Cr\u00e9mant du Jura<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0This marked the culmination of work that began in the late 1980s by\u00a0Pierre Rolet<\/strong>, winery director at his family\u2019s estate Domaine Rolet in Arbois, who at the time was president of the Arbois winegrowers\u2019 association, vice-president of the Jura winegrowers\u2019 association, and the Jura\u2019s representative to the INAO.

It took\u00a0five years\u00a0<\/strong>of sometimes spirited discussions and a great deal of persuasion to convince all the region\u2019s winegrowers to move from producing sparkling wine with no appellation to an AOC Cr\u00e9mant.
\u00a0

\u201cThe Jura has always produced sparkling wines \u2014 they have existed here for more than a century and a half \u2014 but without an appellation.\u00a0\u00a0I noticed that the creation of Cr\u00e9mant de Bourgogne, and shortly after Cr\u00e9mant d\u2019Alsace, helped develop a strong quality image among professionals and consumers.<\/em>
\u00a0
At the time, sparkling wines from the Jura were known only locally, and the quality was inconsistent.\u00a0\u00a0That\u2019s where the idea came from: to link ourselves to the\u00a0Cr\u00e9mant family<\/strong>.<\/em>
\u00a0
This brought many constraints, because Cr\u00e9mant production rules are stricter.<\/em><\/p>

  • Only\u00a0150 kg of grapes<\/strong>\u00a0can be used to produce\u00a0100 liters<\/strong>\u00a0of must, so pressing must be handled delicately.<\/em><\/li>
  • The first and last press juices must be separated.<\/em><\/li>
  • And all of this is monitored.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>

    So I had to convince my fellow producers of the merits of the idea. With a few early supporters (Andr\u00e9 Tissot, Daniel Dugois, Lotain Grand, the director of the Arbois Fruiti\u00e8re, and Marcel Jacquier, director of the Maison des Vins de Cran\u00e7ot), we organized\u00a0blind tastings<\/strong>\u00a0of sparkling wines to show everyone the difference in quality and begin to change minds.<\/em>

    There were already winemakers in the region producing sparkling wines aged on lees and using methods close to Cr\u00e9mant, so we were able to compare their wines blind against other sparkling wines made without strict rules.\u00a0\u00a0The differences in quality were clear, and more and more colleagues came on board.<\/em>
    \u00a0
    However, at the same time, a petition had been launched by those opposed to the idea of eventually producing only Cr\u00e9mant in the region.\u00a0\u00a0This was a requirement from the INAO, which had observed that when cr\u00e9mants and basic sparkling wines coexist, cr\u00e9mant struggles to find its place.<\/em>

    The petition collected\u00a0130 signatures<\/strong>, which complicated the process.<\/em>

    I tried to remain diplomatic in order to continue convincing people that an AOC Cr\u00e9mant was a good solution for all of us \u2014 to guarantee quality and help build the reputation of Jura wines.\u00a0\u00a0To ease concerns, I proposed giving winegrowers\u00a0five years<\/strong>\u00a0to stop producing basic sparkling wine \u2014 a smoother transition.<\/em>

    The result:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>

    • In the second year, only\u00a0five<\/strong>\u00a0producers were still making basic sparkling wine.<\/em><\/li>
    • In the third year,\u00a0none<\/strong>\u00a0remained \u2014 everyone could see that the quality had clearly improved.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>

      The application was completed in February 1995, but by September the decree still hadn\u2019t been published, and I was getting worried because harvest season was approaching.<\/em>
      I had to ask the local MP to intervene.\u00a0\u00a0Finally, after\u00a0six months<\/strong>, it was signed on\u00a0October 9, 1995<\/strong>.<\/em>

      This appellation really helped us in our early export efforts.\u00a0\u00a0In the 1990s, our red wines, naturally light in color, were not very noticed, and our more distinctive wines were sometimes difficult for customers to understand.\u00a0Buyers didn\u2019t know how to position Jura wines.<\/em>
      \u00a0
      With the image of\u00a0Cr\u00e9mant du Jura<\/strong>, we were all able to open new international markets.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

      Since 2018, C\u00e9dric Ducot\u00e9 has been managing Domaine Rolet with the same commitment to quality as before.<\/p>

      The vinification of our cr\u00e9mants is extremely meticulous, with slow pressing. The ageing of the base wines on fine lees lasts until Spring, allowing us to bottle wines with beautiful initial substance. They did not undergo malolactic fermentation in order to preserve the precision and definition of the base wine. Finally, the ageing on laths is long, in order to obtain a fine bubble, aromatic complexity, and impressive length.<\/p>

      Thus, our Cr\u00e9mant Brut is aged for 3 years on laths, the Blanc de Blancs\u00a0C\u0153ur de Chardonnay<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0for 4 years, and the Blanc de Noirs for 4 years. A precise range that prioritizes time, with regular and recent disgorgements.<\/p>

      Once again this year, our cr\u00e9mants have been widely recognized in numerous competitions and by both specialized and general publications such as the Bettane & Desseauve Guide<\/em>,\u00a0La Revue du Vin de France<\/em>,\u00a0Le Figaro<\/em>,\u00a0Vinum<\/em><\/strong>, etc., and have received many fine awards.<\/p>

      There is no doubt that our Jura cr\u00e9mants are among the essential wines of our entire range. However, we are equally committed to preserving the distinctiveness of Jura wines with our red wines, white wines, and of course our\u00a0vins sous voile<\/em>, expressive and emblematic of our beautiful region, though increasingly rare in the Jura.<\/p>

      For this reason, we are replanting the Trousseau and Poulsard grape varieties to broaden the diversity of our range and enhance parcel-specific expression. The selection of\u00a0vins sous voile<\/em>\u00a0is rich and spans two appellations: Arbois and C\u00f4tes du Jura.<\/p>

      Championing the colours of the Jura is also rooted in the collective initiatives to which the estate has always been committed, through emblematic regional events such as the Perc\u00e9e du Vin Jaune and the Biou festival.<\/p>
