This vintage has been complicated in the vineyard as everywhere in either Provence or in France. With\u00a0the\u00a0region of Provence being\u00a0so close to the coast, it is usually protected from moisture by the Mistral, however this year, it has experienced an almost tropical climate: hot and humid!<\/p>\n<p>This moisture benefited only the\u00a0Mildew, which put high pressure on the vines this year\u00a0(and Fran\u00e7ois alike). It was his winemaker\u00a0experience that allowed him to fight against it. Early in the season, Fran\u00e7ois\u00a0spotted\u00a0small but visible leaves just touched by Mildew, and knew\u00a0that if the weather conditions continued to present\u00a0a humid and windless climate, the situation could\u00a0deteriorate very quickly. \u00a0The first copper treatments were\u00a0applied on leaves, but in very small quantities to save\u00a0future clusters. Thus, the fruits were\u00a0protected, and were\u00a0not contaminated by the mildew.<\/p>\n<p>Another phenomenon against which it was necessary to adapt and fight concerned\u00a0the arrival of a new insect in the vineyards : the\u00a0caterpillar from North Africa. This borer acts in a vicious way because it enters the bunches of grapes to reproduce,\u00a0hidden inside the berries. It is difficult to detect. These holes left by the caterpillar are then the start\u00a0of berry decay.<\/p>\n<p>It is very important to contain the problem from the first attacks. The mild winters are conducive to its development, meaning\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois will have to ensure that the clusters not harvested do not stay on the ground, and are collected so as not to leave a source of infection for the following year.<\/p>\n<p>At the estate, the manual harvesting was longer than in previous years to properly sort the grapes and bring back to the cellar only perfectly healthy\u00a0ripe bunches.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mcnImage\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/315805b8-96b2-43d3-890e-1839f22e24e3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mcnImage\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/b203ab2d-d869-40bb-bacc-6fc4699b1ec8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo 1 &amp; 2: Harvesting intact grape clusters, traces of\u00a0Mildew on the leaves<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grapes of Very High Quality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is however a very good side to all this moisture: vegetative development!<\/p>\n<p>Water is essential to circulate the mineral elements from the soil to the plants. Several studies have shown that while water stress can be interesting for red grape varieties, it is less good in the case of vinification of ros\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>The vines have never grown so much, nor produced so many leaves. In total, the vines were passed 4 times to trim the growth instead of the usual 1.5 trips to cut back leaves.<br \/>\nThis abundant foliage is perfect for a quality photosynthesis, and therefore an optimal grape diet!<\/p>\n<p>The musts are rich in nitrogen and potassium and already have a nice aromatic structure, with beautiful colour extraction.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mcnImage\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/d80fe1ef-147d-4e6a-be38-0de435f07326.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mcnImage\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/_compresseds\/1782be99-c7bc-4cbb-8c4d-20a052f276d6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo 1 &amp; 2: Harvest time &#8211; lots of green, lots of leaves!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vineyard Work after Harvest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just after the harvest has finished, Fran\u00e7ois is already thinking about preparing the next. Time is an ally and the patient winemaker\u00a0knows how to work with the seasons! This year Fran\u00e7ois did a test of natural mulching on 3 ha. The goal is always the same: to maintain living soils that are\u00a0therefore rich and able to be an excellent support for the vine!<\/p>\n<p>To have\u00a0natural mulching, seedling from a\u00a0mixture of grasses + vetches (a legume which will allow a nitrogen enrichment via a symbiosis between a fungus and its roots: the mycorrhizas) are planted after the grape harvests. These seedlings will grow with the first rains of autumn. The shoot will stop naturally with the cooling of the soil, and the plants will reach a size of about 8\/10 cm. The\u00a0shoots resume\u00a0again in the spring with the warming soil, potentially\u00a0reaching a height up to 1.2 m.<\/p>\n<p>Using a roller that passes\u00a0between\u00a0the rows of vines, these grasses + vetch (whose stems curl up on grasses) are folded over and pressed to the ground forming a dry straw. This straw creates\u00a0a perfect shade\u00a0for the soil that heats up less quickly, and provides a more comfortable habitat for the micro-fauna of the soil. This is a double contribution: straw for a texture for soils, and legumes for the nitrogen available for the vine.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, the test will be done on 8 ha. Soils have just been prepared to accommodate seedlings.<\/p>\n<p>Like everything at Figui\u00e8re, there will be accurate monitoring of this soil life through continue\u00a0the\u00a0measurements.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 564px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mcnImage\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/97fec4ee-c302-49ff-a939-7b372203eeb5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"450\" align=\"center\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo :\u00a0soil prepared for the next seedlings of crop cover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Projects at Figui\u00e8re<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A true artist never stops creating, and such is the motivations of winemaker Fran\u00e7ois &#8211; a graduate of university with an art degree!<\/p>\n<p>He expresses his creativity in his wines, and we have two new projects to share with you from Figui\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Absolu Ros\u00e9 &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>a new ros\u00e9 made for ageing!<br \/>\nIt is a project that has always been at the heart of the Combard family, making great ros\u00e9s. Why would it be possible to have great white wines of guard and not great ros\u00e9s of guard!<br \/>\n<strong>Absolu<\/strong>\u00a0is the proof.<\/p>\n<p>Mourv\u00e8dre, the typical grape of this sunny region is perfectly adapted for this type of wine. The selected Mourv\u00e8dres are from plots on schistous soils of the estate. This grape gives notes more vinous and complex, that evolve very well over time.<\/p>\n<p>A blend of 60% Mourv\u00e8dre and 40% Grenache Noir, the wine has been fully vinified and matured in barrels and half-barrels. The wines were tasted very regularly;\u00a0it is a ros\u00e9 without woody notes.<\/p>\n<p>The ageing gave the wine a beautiful spine and a complex aromatic expression and only the barrels that did not mark the wine by the tannins of the wood were used. The test is a great success and we should have the <strong>Absolu<\/strong>\u00a0export range next year!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mcnImage\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/fdc755b1-0e77-4c19-991a-373b83933c7d.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" \/>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mcnImage\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/b0fe4d72-f2a8-4678-ac47-2d7e9f412bd9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Another exciting project:<\/strong> a 100% &#8220;whole-cluster&#8221; Mourv\u00e8dre cuv\u00e9e<\/p>\n<p>A new red wine will be ready in a few months. \u00a0Again, this is a very small production with 900 liters of wine only!<\/p>\n<p>The clusters of Mourv\u00e8dre are vinified with the stalk. The grapes have been harvested with a very beautiful maturity and a slightly lignified stalk that will bring no vegetal note to the wine.
