{"id":2647,"date":"2017-08-30T11:45:13","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T10:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genuinewines.com\/en\/?p=2647"},"modified":"2021-03-25T17:39:13","modified_gmt":"2021-03-25T16:39:13","slug":"welcome-ardeche-les-7-pierres-2017-visit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/genuinewines.com\/en\/blog\/welcome-ardeche-les-7-pierres-2017-visit\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to Ard\u00e8che &#8211; Les 7 Pierres &#8211; 2017 Visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/9710a569-4ebf-4db6-ae69-7a68e41aa793.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"637\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo : Mas Heritage &#8211; Les 7 Pierres<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Winery Visit and Tasting: Les 7 Pierres<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>August 23, 2017<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Ard\u00e8che. \u00a0This region largely remains off the beaten trail\u00a0for wine-tourists and wine professionals alike who make a pilgrimage to the mighty Rh\u00f4ne wine appellation. \u00a0Even the pronunciation of the name &#8220;Ard\u00e8che&#8221; crescendos\u00a0into somewhat of a whisper, almost as\u00a0a secret that the locals would prefer to keep to themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Named after the river that divides this mountainous region, the Ard\u00e8che is as old as the existence of humanity itself. \u00a0Thousand-metre-high mountains, with rock shelves carved like mother nature&#8217;s own terraces,\u00a0frame the highway into the area. \u00a0Evidence of prehistoric inhabitants are found still to this day in the caves tucked amongst\u00a0the rock structures.<\/p>\n<p>Descending South into the Ard\u00e8che, there are swaths of pine forests, and an assortment of adventure practically begging extreme sports enthusiasts to come : hiking, rock-climbing, mountain-biking, canoeing, kayaking, etc.<\/p>\n<p>We are here for wine &#8211; specifically Les 7 Pierres &#8211; the project of Fran\u00e7ois Tissot at his historic Farmhouse, affectionately called Mas Heritage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/7642ceeb-652f-467a-b336-75fa78690eb4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"299\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Story of Mas Heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Francois purchased the property in 2013, and in just four short years, he has accomplished quite the feat!<\/p>\n<p>Centuries ago, the\u00a0farm operated entirely in\u00a0permaculture, growing grapes to make wine, planting potatoes in-between the vines (among other crops), and even harvesting silkworms. \u00a0Horses were used to work the fields back then too, with historic stables on the property. \u00a0With the last addition to the Mas dated 1855, quite a lot of renovations have already commenced, with more planned for the future. \u00a0Fran\u00e7ois endeavours to incorporate organic and sustainable philosophies in his restoration of the property.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/1e5f3e29-3233-466a-a608-0c4cca9e204b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/e91eaeec-283d-441b-a9fa-11bbe3aa97b9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reclaiming old vineyards was no simple task. \u00a0The terraces had been\u00a0covered in pine forests that had overgrown on the property during the past decades since the vines were abandoned. \u00a0After calling in foresters, the most important task for Fran\u00e7ois was to restore soil health from the acidic structure that the pine trees had left. \u00a0This was accomplished with the addition of calcium and chalk to the vineyards, via seaweed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/49f82d94-dc45-43af-aa37-86d286e7d0a7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo : Reclaimed terraced vineyards at Mas Heritage &#8211; the parcel was formerly covered with pine trees, like the forest behind the vines here<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soil health still remains a big focus for Fran\u00e7ois, with much time devoted to on working the soil in order to have a lively and &#8220;breathing&#8221; terroir. \u00a0How does this treatment work? This plant is an indicator\u00a0of compact soil.\u00a0 When he started he had many of them, tilling and ploughing the soil have been the actions to get rid of them !<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lucky Number 7<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Domaine&#8217;s name &#8211;\u00a0Les 7 Pierres (Seven Stones) &#8211; was selected\u00a0with intention by Fran\u00e7ois. \u00a0Pierres (meaning <em>stones<\/em> in English) are littered throughout the sandstone of the Trias c\u00e9venol,\u00a0and are literally bursting with minerals and quartz.<\/p>\n<p>Now why the number seven? \u00a0The Ard\u00e8che wine region contains exactly 7 appellations: Coteau de l\u2019Ard\u00e8che,\u00a0Saint Joseph,\u00a0Cornas,\u00a0Condrieu, Saint P\u00e9ray, C\u00f4tes du Rh\u00f4ne and C\u00f4tes du Vivarais. \u00a0Perhaps it is also no coincidence that Fran\u00e7ois has been\u00a0blessed with 5 beautiful children, making that\u00a0seven members in his family\u00a0! \u00a0Through his Domaine plantings at Mas Heritage and negoce activity, Fran\u00e7ois makes a solid range of wines from these 7 appellations.<\/p>\n<p>The 3 Ha vineyard at Mas Heritage is farmed organically with white plantings of\u00a0Chardonnay,\u00a0Viognier,\u00a0Sauvignon Blanc, and\u00a0Riesling, which Fran\u00e7ois has planted in hommage to his grandmother, who comes from Alsace. \u00a0Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon are the red varietals planted on the property. \u00a0One remaining hectare will be planted in 2019 to cover the whole vineyard, making 4 Ha. It is Francois&#8217; hope that he will be able to purchase a remaining 3 Ha plot adjacent to his property from his neighbour, meaning he will have in total : 7 Ha.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/9f6dfdd4-0b32-46c4-9279-bdf54d46818d.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"492\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vintage 2017\u2026 Ice, Frost, Hail&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With harvest levels being at their lowest in decades throughout France, the Ard\u00e8che is not excluded from experiencing limited yields. \u00a0This precocious vintage began with problems starting in winter, with lots of ice coating the vines. \u00a0It wasn&#8217;t the ice that was the problem, but the quick arrival of warmer temperatures that started in Spring. \u00a0The cold-snap was broken by a hotter-than-normal March, with bud break starting by the end of the month, just into early April.<\/p>\n<p>Like many vignerons in France, the period of the 24-27 of April saw black frost and sub-zero temperatures throughout the vineyard. \u00a0In the early summer, while vines were still recovering from a 15% loss of flowers that spring, the first of a series of hail episodes started on June 10th &#8211; one month before grapes started to appear. \u00a0Five more hail storms rolled through the vineyards, finally ending their assault in early August.<\/p>\n<p>When vines are physiologically stressed &#8211; ice, frost, hail &#8211; without any mercy, they mobilize their natural defence mechanisms. \u00a0Vine growth slowed, but threats of disease were a direct result of the hail storms.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the grapes that did survive have started to come to maturity nicely, but in very small quantity. Though much of the region is suffering the effects of a hot, dry summer, with local rivers running dry, Mas Heritage has never had a problem with lack of water.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/58e341e4-38fc-4a46-9690-08d7a0acd38c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/e6cb7fab-6228-492a-906a-8d433c4581c7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"201\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/793ee557-fb33-4877-9922-bf46b0b18d9b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo 1 : Tasting at the night market in Les Vans &#8211; a wonderful Tuesday evening!<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Photo 2 : Barrels of sleeping Coteau de l&#8217;Ard\u00e8che rouge<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Photo 3 : Les Sept Pierres new label &#8211; designed in the brush-stroke\u00a0style of\u00a0Japanese Kanji as an\u00a0homage to Francois&#8217; wife Marie, who is of Japanese origin<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Vintages Currently Available &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Coteau de l\u2019Ard\u00e8che Blanc 2016<\/strong><br \/>\n(Chardonnay, Grenache, Marsanne)<br \/>\nHerbal nose with the scent of pine, sap, and anise. \u00a0The acidity is crisp and fresh, with a slight hint of ramps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saint Joseph Blanc 2015<\/strong><br \/>\n(100% Roussanne)<br \/>\nToasted corn-husk, anise, Jasmine and oleander flowers. \u00a0The palate delights with texture; round and creamy, with a salty cracker finish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saint P\u00e9ray Blanc 2014<\/strong><br \/>\n(50% Marsanne 50% Roussanne)<br \/>\nTo taste this wine blind would easily fool a good palate with the fruits of an extraordinary Burgundy white. \u00a0Notes of vanilla, aged hard cheese (Comt\u00e9), and fresh lemon on the nose, continue melt on the palate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Condrieu<\/strong>\u00a0(small quantities available)<br \/>\n(100% Viognier)<br \/>\nIntense nose of apricot, white peach, mango\u2026 mouth is fresh with a good blend of floral and mineral flavours. Texture is silky, rich and fine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C\u00f4tes du\u00a0Vivrais\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n(60% Syrah 40% Grenache)<br \/>\nFruit forward cassis, blackberries and mulberries dominate the nose of this wine. \u00a0Garrigue, cacao powder, and blood-iron give the palate just the right amount of funk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coteau de l&#8217;Ard\u00e8che 2015<\/strong><br \/>\n(90% Syrah 10% Grenache)<br \/>\nRound and very fruity, cacao hints and blackberry aromas. Herbaceous anise, olives, and baking cacao. \u00a0The mouth is velvety and tannins very soft.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C\u00f4tes du Rhone\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n(60% Grenache 40% Syrah)<br \/>\nThe notes of dried blackberries and mulberries, dried garrigue, and dusty graphite are found easily on the nose, however an explosion of floral elegance and juicy acidity with supple tannins ensures this wine is expressing its full potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saint Joseph<\/strong><br \/>\n(100% Syrah)<br \/>\nGood intensity on nose, classic profile with an onctuous mouth. Complex flavors of rubarbe, anise, jasmin with savoury pepper and meatiness. Elegant and fine wine!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cornas<\/strong> (small quantity available)<br \/>\n(100% Syrah)<br \/>\nToasted nose and black currant nose, mouth with spicy aromas, pepper, leather, truffle, more animal.<br \/>\nStructured wine with spine of elegant tannins.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/0238931e-c4e4-4d88-8b9f-d7b6d0c80ed8.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"207\" \/>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/8cc45cf08bf7beaf6f607b870\/images\/62023502-6cc2-43e0-8887-05050401c9a1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo 1 : Kids taking advantage of the natural water pool just in front of the eco-Gites<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Photo 2 : Marie hosting apero with the brilliant &#8220;crepe-party&#8221; grill<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Current\u00a0and Future Projects &#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Francois has been very thoughtful in his sustainable restoration of the old farmhouse at Mas Heritage. \u00a0He has converted the entire power system to solar panels installed on the roof of the farmhouse, as well as on the roof of the Gites he has installed on the property. \u00a0The swimming pool is 100% chlorine free rain-collected water, filtered through a pond. \u00a0Francois also built two modern and ecological self-contained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HomeSweetGreen\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HomeSweetGreen\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Gites<\/a> (vacation apartment rentals) on his property just adjacent to the vineyards. One from the old stable when horses were used earlier in the XVIII and XIX century.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to seeing his current Domaine plantings come to bear fruit, Francois has his sights set on his neighbour&#8217;s property, hoping to convert the existing pine forest there to 1Ha of white, and 2Ha of red grapes.<\/p>\n<p>And then, if the dream comes true, a stable will be built to host horses that Fran\u00e7ois would love to use for working his vineyard.
